Maeve Binchy was one of my favorite writers. I’ve read all her stuff, from Echoes and The Glass Lake to The Copper Beech and Scarlet Feather and The Lilac Bus. She was a natural Irish storyteller with a gentle heart.
She will be deeply missed.
Rest in peace, Maeve. And thank you for the stories.

Oh Maeve …. I loved Evening Class, Circle of Friends, and Light a Penny Candle. I will remember these big sagas that kept me such great company, like getting a wonderful bedtime story from a favorite aunt.
“a wonderful bedtime story from a favorite aunt.”
Exactly right, Teri.
That’s a perfect description. Comfort reading.
(and Gore Vidal)
the next stop just gained two greats.
Gore Vidal too??
yep, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/01/gore-vidal-dead-author-playwright-intellectual-obituary_n_1726666.html
When I needed a book that was the equivalent of chicken soup, Maeve was there. She made it look so easy when clearly it isn’t.
Yes she did. I always know when I pick up one of her books that I’ll feel better when I’m finished. It’s not what you want from every writer or every reading experience, but when you want to be treated gently, Maeve’s your girl.
I heard about Gore Vidal – have been teaching his plays to ninth graders for a few years now. Hadn’t heard about Maeve! Wow, her books were among the first I read when I started reading beyond my childhood and young adult favorites.
Oh Maeve, my fellow six footer and charming storteller. Write what you know indeed.
